The vast majority of economic growth as well as ecological destruction is now occurring in developing countries, and it is largely in these countries where the environmental and economic future of the world will be decided. No international institution has played a more important role in this arena than the World Bank, not because of the financial scale of its lending, but through its political and intellectual influence.
Join international attorney and author Bruce Rich as he discusses the findings of his book Foreclosing the Future: The World Bank and the Politics of Environmental Destruction. Drawing on hundreds of case studies, World Bank internal reports, and hearings of the U.S. Congress and UK Parliament. Rich has uncovered a deeply disturbing story of how the world’s leading development institution and the international system at large have failed to come to terms with the ecological challenges of economic development. The World Bank is the Vatican of development finance, and its dysfunction plays out as a reflection of the political hypocrisies and failures of governance of its 188 member countries.
